At Lakeside Regenerrative Clinic, Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that uses specialised techniques to create the appearance of closely shaved hair follicles and improved scalp density. It may be considered for individuals experiencing hair thinning, pattern hair loss, scarring, or visible scalp.

SMP does not stimulate new hair growth. Instead, it creates a visual effect that can improve the appearance of hair density and define the scalp and hairline.

1. Principle

The principle of SMP is to place carefully selected pigment into the superficial layers of the scalp to replicate the appearance of natural hair follicles.

The treatment is designed around the patient's natural hair colour, skin tone, existing hair pattern, and desired hairline to achieve a subtle and natural-looking result.

Key principles include:

  • Creating the appearance of closely shaved hair follicles
  • Improving the visual appearance of scalp density
  • Defining or restoring the appearance of a hairline
  • Camouflaging selected scalp scars
  • Matching pigment placement to existing hair characteristics
  • Maintaining natural-looking follicle patterns and spacing

2. Mechanism

During SMP, specialised equipment is used to deposit small amounts of pigment into the superficial dermal layer of the scalp.

Individual pigment deposits are carefully placed at varying positions, angles, and densities to mimic the appearance of natural hair follicles. Multiple treatment sessions may be required to gradually develop the desired density and refine the result.

The procedure does not produce new hair follicles or stimulate hair growth. Its effect is primarily cosmetic and visual.

Overall approach:

Scalp assessment → Hairline and pigment planning → Precise pigment placement → Layering and refinement → Natural-looking follicle appearance

3. Indications

SMP may be considered for individuals with:

  • Male or female pattern hair loss
  • Thinning hair with increased scalp visibility
  • Receding hairline
  • Advanced hair loss
  • Alopecia-related scalp visibility, depending on the condition
  • Scalp scars following hair transplantation or injury
  • Reduced visual hair density
  • Desire for the appearance of a closely shaved hairstyle

SMP may also be used alongside hair transplantation or other hair-restoration treatments to improve the visual appearance of overall density.

4. Contraindications & Precautions

A scalp assessment should be performed before SMP to determine suitability and minimise complications.

Potential contraindications may include:

  • Active scalp infection or significant inflammation
  • Open wounds or compromised scalp skin
  • Active dermatological conditions affecting the treatment area
  • Known sensitivity or allergy to pigment components
  • Certain uncontrolled medical conditions
  • Conditions that significantly impair wound healing

Important precautions include:

  • Use of medications that increase bleeding
  • History of abnormal or excessive scarring
  • Recent scalp surgery or hair transplantation
  • Significant scalp sensitivity
  • Active hair or scalp disorders
  • Unrealistic expectations regarding pigment colour, density, or permanence
